Step 1
Get the Design File
Go to the
Step 2
Adjust Cut File Settings
Select Material: Medium Basswood Plywood works with my preferred Baltic Birch mentioned in the above Materials list. Test yours if not using the same.
This project works well with Basswood and Baltic Birch, each take wood stain nicely.
Step 3
Load Material & Cut Layers
Load 1/8″ chosen Material
Cut all layers. Set Aside.
Step 4
Paint / Stain Layers
(If you did not pre-stain or paint your material) Test your chosen colors on a scrap wood piece. I used stamp pads for adding color to the door base and the butterfly and acrylic paint pens for coloring the mushroom caps:
– Tree Trunk Door Frame: Early American Wood Stain by Minwax 1/2 pt.
– Green Door: Ranger Ink pad Distress Oxides in Twisted Citron
– Butterfly: Ranger Ink pad Distress Oxides in Speckled Egg
– Mushroom Caps: Uni Posca Medium Marker, Red
Allow to dry at least to the touch before gluing.
Step 5
Glue & Assemble Layers
GLUE: I’ve gone through soooo many adhesives in all my crafting years – good, bad, and the ugly. For an intricate pieces like this, you want a high-strength adhesive that will dry crystal clear and not take too much fuss in applying it. So far, the best adhesive I’ve used is Devcon Home Weldit High Strength All Purpose Adhesive. It gives you 5min of working time, then sets up within a couple hours, curing fully overnight. Oh and did I mention it’s Crystal clear?!! Yes, it’s my go-to adhesive for wood to wood fine-detail projects.
Assemble the Design:
Apply glue to the underside of the tree trunk top layer, spread evenly, a small paintbrush helps. Press together with the light green door base layer. Set aside to dry.
Once it’s dry enough for handling, glue on the Acorn door knocker, the Doorknob, the Butterfly on the right side perch, and the mushrooms to the left side of the door. Mushrooms can be affixed to the wall separately or on top of the left side of the fairy door, up to you.
Apply a large heavy book atop the finished door. Allow to dry this way overnight.
Step 6
Add to Wall
I recommend using 3M Command Wall Adhesive Strips – rated up to 5lbs. I place one on the back of the door and then press it against the wall for 30 seconds as the directions instruct. Now it’s attached until you decide to remove it. Remember to have the white strip pull tab facing down and toward the floor so it isn’t noticeable.
